Steel & Metal

Primary metals manufacturing is one of the most punishing industrial environments on earth. Syn-Fab’s extreme-temperature steel mill camera systems provide continuous, real-time visualization of your most critical assets. From advanced reheat furnace monitoring to blast furnace diagnostics, our ruggedized foundry cameras allow operators to optimize burner performance, track slab positioning, and ensure personnel safety in areas too hostile for human presence.

SYN-FAB IS TRUSTED BY INDUSTRY LEADERS

The Challenge of Visibility in Primary Metals

In steel mills and foundries, heat is the product, but it is also the enemy of process visibility. Operating massive reheat furnaces, basic oxygen furnaces (BOF), or electric arc furnaces (EAF) blindly forces plant managers to rely on delayed sensor data. This lack of visual confirmation can lead to uneven heating, slab collisions, or catastrophic breakouts. Syn-Fab’s steel mill camera systems eliminate these blind spots, delivering live, high-definition visual and thermal data directly to the safety of the control room.

Advanced Foundry Cameras for Extreme Heat

Syn-Fab has engineered a complete line of high-temperature imaging solutions specifically for the metallurgical industry. Our flagship Predator line utilizes specialized Near-IR (SF12N-SP) and Long-Wave IR (SF12L) sensors to penetrate thick combustion smoke and intense radiant glare. Housed in heavy-duty, liquid-cooled enclosures with continuous vortex air-purging, our foundry cameras survive and thrive where other systems melt.

Critical Monitoring Zones in Steel Production

Reheat Furnace Monitoring

Maintaining proper slab spacing and uniform temperature is critical before rolling. Syn-Fab cameras allow operators to visually verify slab positioning, monitor burner flame geometry, and prevent costly pile-ups or “walking beam” failures inside the furnace.

Melt Shop & Ladle Operations

Visibility during the melt is essential for safety and quality control. From monitoring the electric arc furnace (EAF) to overseeing ladle metallurgy, degassing, and teeming operations, our steel mill imaging systems provide operators with a clear view of the molten bath, slag conditions, and pour rates.

Continuous Casting & Rolling

A breakout on a continuous caster is one of the most dangerous and expensive events in a mill. Syn-Fab process cameras provide continuous monitoring of the tundish, mold level, and secondary cooling zones. Additionally, our ruggedized housings easily handle the high-steam environments of the hot strip mill and runout tables.

“Operating massive reheat furnaces or electric arc furnaces blindly forces plant managers to rely on delayed sensor data, leading to uneven heating, slab collisions, or catastrophic breakouts.”

Protecting Personnel in Hostile Environments

The primary goal of any steel mill is to keep personnel out of harm’s way. By providing high-resolution visual feedback of the most dangerous processes in the plant, Syn-Fab allows operators to monitor, adjust, and troubleshoot from the safety of the control pulpit. From the blast furnace to the rolling mill, Syn-Fab is your partner in safe, efficient metallurgical operations.

Steel & Metal FAQs

Review common questions regarding the installation, operation, and environmental protection of our Steel & Metal. Don't see your specific application addressed? Our engineering team is available to help you configure the right imaging solution for your facility.
What is the maximum temperature your steel mill camera systems can withstand?
Our extreme high-temperature systems, such as the Predator line, are engineered to operate continuously in environments reaching up to 3500°F (1926°C), making them ideal for blast furnaces, electric arc furnaces (EAF), and reheat furnace applications.
Can your foundry cameras track slabs inside a reheat furnace?
Yes. Effective reheat furnace monitoring requires visual confirmation of slab positioning to prevent pile-ups and ensure uniform heating. Our near-infrared (NIR) and long-wave infrared (LWIR) cameras easily cut through combustion gases, providing operators with a clear view of the slabs as they move through the furnace.
Do you offer cameras for continuous casting operations?
Absolutely. Monitoring the continuous caster is critical to prevent dangerous breakouts. Syn-Fab steel mill imaging systems provide clear views of the mold level, tundish pour, and runout tables, even in high-steam and heavy particulate environments.
