Core Operations & Protection FAQs

Syn-Fab camera systems are designed to monitor process temperatures up to 3,500°F (1,927°C). The appropriate camera model, cooling method, furnace lens configuration, and installation arrangement are specifically selected based on your application and operating environment.

Selection depends primarily on process temperature and viewing conditions. IR cameras are often preferred for lower-temperature applications (like heat-treat furnaces), or in high-temperature environments with heavy smoke, steam, or haze where visible-light cameras lose contrast. Syn-Fab will recommend the appropriate wavelength based on your specific process conditions.

Syn-Fab systems are primarily protected by a continuous instrument-air purge that cools both the furnace lens assembly and the camera housing, while simultaneously keeping the viewing window free of dust and debris. Depending on the extreme nature of the application, additional protection such as liquid cooling or an automatic retract system can also be incorporated.

The optional auto-retract system provides a critical level of protection. In the event of a loss of cooling air or electrical power, the camera is automatically withdrawn from the process. Without adequate cooling, a camera left inserted into a furnace can quickly suffer severe damage to the lens assembly and camera core.

Yes. Syn-Fab temperature monitoring systems, particularly when paired with our PV-HD software, can be configured to generate alarms when user-defined temperature thresholds are exceeded. These alarm outputs can be seamlessly integrated into your plant control system or DCS.

Routine maintenance should include verifying that the compressed air supply remains clean and dry, replacing air filtration elements, inspecting the furnace lens for debris or slag buildup, verifying auto-retract operation (if equipped), and checking all electrical and communication connections.

General System Capability FAQs

Yes. Instrument-quality compressed air is the most common cooling and purging method, but alternative solutions such as nitrogen or other inert gasses can be used where compressed air is not suitable or available. For applications requiring complete isolation from the process environment, a fully sealed wallbox is available to prevent purge air/gas from entering the process.

In most applications, a visible-light camera can provide usable images down to approximately 1,000°F (540°C). Below this temperature, there may be insufficient radiant energy for the camera to produce a clear image without supplemental process lighting. Depending on the application, a near-infrared (NIR) or infrared (IR) camera may be the better solution for lower-temperature processes.

Yes. Certain Syn-Fab infrared camera systems can provide both process imagery and surface temperature measurements. Combining our proprietary software with our IR camera systems allows virtually unlimited ROI’s for temperature monitoring with the ability to set alarm levels.

Calibration requirements vary by product family, temperature measurement requirements, and application. Some infrared temperature monitoring systems may benefit from periodic verification or calibration to maintain accuracy, while many observation-only camera systems do not require annual calibration. Syn-Fab can recommend the appropriate schedule for the specific system.

Yes. Syn-Fab’s furnace cameras can be ordered in a portable configuration that allows real-time inspections during operation, including a smaller air assembly and a local monitor with recording capabilities.

Cooling, Air, and Protection FAQs

In most applications, water cooling is not required. Syn-Fab camera systems are typically protected using an air purge that cools both the furnace lens and camera housing. For extremely demanding environments or specialized applications, water-cooled camera systems are available.

Most Syn-Fab furnace camera systems require clean, dry compressed air at approximately 15–20 PSI and 15–20 SCFM to provide adequate cooling and purge the viewing window. Actual air requirements vary depending on the camera model, furnace lens length, and operating environment.

In many applications, yes. Mill air can often be used provided it is properly filtered, dry, and oil-free before reaching the camera system. The air supplied to the camera should be clean and free of moisture, oil, and particulate contamination. Contaminated air can reduce cooling efficiency, shorten component life, and degrade system performance.

If the system is equipped with a Syn-Fab auto-retract, the camera will automatically retract and withdraw the furnace lens upon loss of purge air or electrical power. The system can also be configured to retract on high-temperature alarms or other user-defined alarm conditions.

The automatic deslagger is designed to significantly reduce the frequency of manual port cleaning by helping maintain a clear viewing path. However, depending on process conditions and slag accumulation, occasional manual cleaning may still be necessary. Effectiveness depends on slag characteristics, process temperature, and operating conditions.

Installation and Integration FAQs

Standard furnace lens lengths begin at 24 inches and are available in 12-inch increments up to 60 inches. Custom lengths are available for longer insertion requirements.

Yes. Syn-Fab camera systems can be integrated with most existing plant control systems and DCS platforms. Multiple output and interface options are available, allowing the systems to be incorporated into most control architectures.

Yes. Syn-Fab offers both Ethernet/IP and analog camera systems. Regardless of the camera platform selected, video can typically be converted to the transmission format required by the facility, making integration with existing infrastructure straightforward.

Syn-Fab recommends RG-59/U 75-ohm coaxial cable for most analog video installations. For longer cable runs or electrically noisy industrial environments, higher-performance coaxial cable may be recommended to maintain optimum video quality. Proper cable routing and grounding practices are also important.

Yes. Syn-Fab camera systems are designed so the camera can be removed for inspection, cleaning, or maintenance without shutting down the process. An optional self-sealing wallbox closes when the camera is removed, helping protect personnel and equipment from process heat, pressure, and blowback.

Maintenance, Parts, and Repair FAQs

Recommended spare parts depend on the application and process criticality. Common recommendations include solenoid valves, spare furnace lens components, air filtration elements, and a spare camera core for critical applications. Syn-Fab can recommend a customized spare parts package.

Syn-Fab offers quick turnaround on most repairs, and loaner systems are available for emergency situations when appropriate. Syn-Fab manufactures major assemblies in-house and maintains a large inventory of spare parts. Parts or accessories can often ship within a few business days to two weeks, depending on availability and manufacturing requirements.
