Smelt Bed Cameras

Penetrate dense chemical smoke and falling ash to continuously monitor char bed health, smelt spout flow, and black liquor combustion with the industry standard in recovery boiler imaging.

SYN-FAB IS TRUSTED BY INDUSTRY LEADERS

The Challenge of Recovery Boiler Monitoring

Operating a chemical recovery boiler in a pulp mill is one of the most volatile and dangerous processes in heavy industry. Operators must maintain a delicate balance of black liquor combustion, char bed height, and continuous smelt flow. If the char bed builds up too high, it chokes the boiler; if a water tube leaks and contacts the smelt bed, it can cause a catastrophic explosion. Standard cameras are immediately blinded by the dense chemical smoke, falling ash, and extreme heat, leaving control room operators completely blind to rapidly deteriorating combustion conditions.

Wavelength-Optimized Smelt Bed Imaging

Syn-Fab smelt bed camera systems—including the industry-standard Terminator series—utilize advanced, wavelength-optimized infrared optics specifically designed to cut through dense recovery boiler smoke and chemical haze. Housed in rugged PIII STEELON™ enclosures with continuous air-purge protection, our systems provide a crystal-clear, real-time view of the char bed, smelt spouts, and burner zones, ensuring continuous operation in ambient temperatures up to 550°F (289°C).

Operational Benefits:

  • Monitor Char Bed Health: Visually confirm char bed height, shape, and stability to optimize the black liquor firing rate and prevent boiler choking.
  • Ensure Smelt Spout Flow: Continuously monitor the smelt spouts for blockages or heavy runoff, preventing dangerous buildup and shattered shatter jets.
  • Prevent Water-Smelt Explosions: Detect tube leaks instantly, allowing operators to initiate emergency shutdown procedures before water contacts the active smelt bed.
  • Eliminate Port Rodding Risks: Drastically reduce the need for personnel to conduct hazardous manual visual inspections at the boiler observation ports.

Smelt Bed Cameras FAQs

Review common questions regarding the installation, operation, and environmental protection of our Smelt Bed Cameras. Don't see your specific application addressed? Our engineering team is available to help you configure the right imaging solution for your facility.
Can the camera see through the heavy smoke in a black liquor recovery boiler?
Yes. Syn-Fab smelt bed cameras utilize specialized mid-wave infrared (MWIR) optical configurations that are specifically tuned to penetrate the dense chemical smoke, falling ash, and volatile gases unique to black liquor recovery boilers.
How do the cameras survive the corrosive environment of a recovery boiler?
Our high-temperature recovery boiler cameras are protected by proprietary IP66/NEMA 4X STEELON™ housings—a high-temperature synthetic material molded over stainless steel—which provides superior resistance to the highly corrosive chemicals and extreme heat found in pulp mills.
Can the system provide temperature data for the char bed?
Yes. When utilizing our Pyro-Viper-HD software, the system can provide real-time, multi-zone thermal mapping of the smelt bed, allowing operators to identify localized cooling, monitor temperature gradients, and set custom alarms.
Will the automatic deslagger eliminate the need for manual port rodding?
The automatic deslagger is designed to significantly reduce the frequency of manual port cleaning by helping maintain a clear viewing path. However, depending on process conditions and slag accumulation, occasional manual cleaning may still be necessary. Effectiveness depends on slag characteristics, process temperature, and operating conditions.
